THE gym which is helping Lote Tuqiri keep fit while the Wests Tigers winger recovers from injury has become a hit with the Balmain community because of its friendly atmosphere.

Tuqiri, who is recovering from wrist surgery, has trained at the Rozelle gym, Sweatbox, to keep fit ahead of the NRL season.

"It's a local gym and it's been helpful," Tuqiri said.

"It is nice and warm and you get in a good workout."

Owner Jesse Reid said the mixed martial arts gym was popular in the area because of its "community vibe".

"It has a strong community vibe because most of the people who come here are locals," Reid said.

"It is intense fitness, but also a bit gritty - that's what people love about Sweatbox."

The gym runs a children's class Rock and Water Kids, where children learn self-defence and how to deal with bullying situations.

Brazilian jiu jitsu, karate and judo are also part of the class for 4-12-year-olds.

Reid said the class deals with the problems of smaller kids being bullied, after being contacted by concerned parents.

Sweatbox, which has been on Victoria Rd for the past three years, is also a Jiu Jitsu Gracie Oceania affiliated club, Reid said.

Lote Tuqiri Online

A strong motivator for me creating Lote Tuqiri Online - The Official Website of Lote Tuqiri is for my fans, Rugby League lovers and other sports fans to learn more about me - the man behind the rugby league player.

Here's a some information about different aspects of my life, which you may or may not know about.

My Goals and Aspirations
To be a good husband and father and spend as much time with my family as I can.

Family History
I came to Australia from Fiji when I was very young. I have two sisters, one brother and who knows how many cousins both here and abroad. If you're reading this, you've probably met one.

Multiculturalism
Growing up with my Fijian heritage in Australia, and going on to play professional sport around the world has enabled me to understand and relate quite well to other cultures. I'm lucky to be part of such a supporting culture when it comes to Rugby, as Fiji and Rugby are often put together in the same breath. Within the Waratahs there's probably six or seven different nationalities and cultures represented which fosters a real multicultural feel within the playing group.

Sport and Fitness
I've been lucky enough to make a career out of sport; it's something I knew I wanted to do and focused on from when I was a teenager. Even if I hadn't made it to the level I have, I know that sport and fitness would always remain a big part of my life. I've often said to friends that if I wasn't playing professionally, I'd be a weekend warrior playing park footy or involved in club sport in some way.

Charities
I think it's really important to support those that are doing great things in the community. There are many organisations I, and those close to me, give time to support. Some of them can be found on My Mates page.
